Windsor, Berkshire travel information
Windsor Berkshire England
Windsor is located to the west of London alongside the River Thames and provides the ideal day out from the city for many tourists and Londoners alike. For most people their main reason for visiting Windsor is the see the majestic Windsor Castle that dominates the town. However, a tour around the castle can easily take the best part of a day and Windsor has plenty more offer besides.
The town itself is a pretty one featuring plenty of good pubs and restaurants and a wide selection of shops, many of which are housed in the modern Windsor Royal Station complex.
Other areas of interest include the Guildhall designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the lopsided Market Cross House next to it and Burford House on Church Street, where Charles II is rumoured to have housed his mistress Nell Gwyn.
The Windsor area also enjoys a packed calendar of social events. For example in late September and early October you’ll find the Windsor Festival with its programme of musical concerts, whilst May sees the Royal Windsor Horse Show. Other local events worth finding out about include the Cliveden Festival, Henley Festival of Music & The Arts and the Henley and Marlow Regattas.
