Windsor Castle is one of the Queen’s Official Royal Residences and as the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world is hugely popular with tourists. Since the tragic fire in 1992 a great deal of work has been undertaken to restore it to its former glory and thankfully visitors can now marvel at the excellent craftsmanship across the different eras. Must see sights on a visit to the castle include the opulent State Apartments, St George’s Chapel and Queen Mary’s Doll’s House.
Legoland Windsor is an award-winning theme park and a very popular attraction with Windsor’s younger visitors. Tickets aren’t cheap but once inside everything is free and there’s certainly plenty to see and do, from the white-knuckle rides to whole cities such as London recreated in miniature using Lego. You’ll also get the chance to visit Castleland, the Wild Woods and the Imagination Centre and even try your hand at building your own creation in Lego.
A short stroll across Windsor Bridge takes you over the River Thames and into Eton, with its pretty High Street and numerous gift and antique shops, whilst at the far end of the High Street is the grounds of Eton College. The world famous college was founded back in the 15th century and has educated many famous people including 18 prime ministers and more recently Princes William and Harry. Visitors are permitted into the college grounds between the hours of 2pm-4.30pm during term times, with guided tours available on request.
If you fancy seeing a bit of the countryside around Windsor then the best place to go to is Windsor Great Park. Located to the south of the Castle the Great Park stretches out over 40 square miles, so it’s worth obtaining a map before setting out on foot. Particular areas worth exploring include the Savill Garden and the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Plantation.
